DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) is a type of therapy that teaches people the mindfulness skills necessary to live in the present vs. focusing on the past or worrying about the future. It also teaches skills to improve relationships, communication skills, emotion regulation, and healthy coping skills. The sessions are grouped into the following 4 topics:
- Mindfulness—focusing on the present vs. focusing on the past or worrying about the future.
- Distress Tolerance—learning how to tolerate or survive crisis situations without resorting to unhealthy or self-destructive behaviors.
- Interpersonal Effectiveness—how to be assertive in a relationship (for example, expressing needs and saying “no”) in a way that is less likely to damage the relationship than other communication styles.
- Emotion Regulation—recognizing and coping with challenging emotions (anger, anxiety, etc.) and improving resilience by increasing positive emotional experiences.
DBT was initially used with people who have Borderline Personality Disorder, but these methods are very helpful for anyone regardless of their diagnosis. In fact, people who do not have a diagnosis also benefit from learning these skills!
